Dedman College Majors
mathematics
That’s why math majors at SMU choose a specialization: applied, pure, computer science, operations research, engineering, or statistics. What distinguishes SMU is that most of these specializations involve studies with other departments – including computer-intensive courses – that will give you the competitive edge in your career.

Careers for Math Majors
With this kind of problem-solving proficiency under your belt, you can go on to prominent positions in many different fields. The greatest corporate and industry demand is for applied mathematics with skills in computer science, design and theory, and statistics and probability.
Many math majors enter fields that might appear to be non-math-related, such as law, dentistry, and medicine. These professions, however, demand analytical skills such as those gained through a major in math.
Faculty
Math faculty members are very accessible, providing instruction in classes that usually number less than 25. Full-time faculty members, who regularly conduct research in such areas as numerical analysis, differential equations, fluid dynamics, and computer software, teach all courses at the level of calculus and above.
Internships & Study Abroad
Dedman College students get paid internships through the Hegi Family Career Development Center.
Math majors can take advantage of SMU Study Abroad Program opportunities. Choose from yearlong, semester, or summer programs at locations around the globe.
