The first or second language in more than 40 countries and spoken by more than 125 million people, French can be a significant asset in the job market, where multinational companies and organizations are thriving. Beyond acquiring essential language skills, you will develop an appreciation for French culture through such courses as French cinema and French literary movements. The French Club is very active and organizes the annual French and Francophone film festival.

in Foreign Languages – French
Students wishing to specialize in two foreign languages may receive the B.A.
degree in foreign languages by completing the requirements for the minor
plus two additional advanced courses in French (Language I), and by completing
the requirements for the minor in Language II. Courses are to be selected
in consultation with the major adviser in Language I. Minors in area studies
may not be applied to this major.

Related Majors and Minors
French can easily be paired with other subjects for a double major. Here are some suggested second majors: art history, political science, history, business management, and economics. Preparation for teacher certification is available through the Center for Teacher Education.
Careers
As a multilingual person, you will enjoy increased opportunities in such career areas as government, international business, news media, education, social work, tourism, and public relations. Qualified students may sit the prestigious Paris Chamber of Commerce exam, Le Certificat Pratique de Français Commercial et Économique, administered each May on the SMU campus.
Faculty
French faculty members are consistently rated highly by both students and peers. In addition to ensuring an engaging curriculum, instructors encourage interaction and involvement in classroom activities.
Internships & Study Abroad
Dedman College students get paid internships through the Hegi Family Career Development Center. Students majoring in French may be eligible to earn up to three (3) graded credits toward their degrees by enrolling for unpaid, faculty-directed internships through the Dedman College Internship Program.
French majors are urged to spend at least one semester or an entire year in France through the SMU Study Abroad Program. Courses in French civilization, history, art, politics, and other subjects are offered at the SMU-in-Paris and SMU-in-the South of France programs.
