Your degree in English will serve as the ideal foundation for almost any career – from numerous areas of the arts and corporate communications to international trade, social services, and education. A major in English with a creative writing specialization is offered for those who desire to hone their personal and professional creative skills while exploring great literary works.

English majors can combine their studies with other majors or minors – such as political science, economics, and history; advertising, journalism, and foriegn languages; and prelegal studies – to prepare for graduate school and careers in government, media, and law.
Careers
Graduates of SMU’s English Department are in all careers – medicine, banking, real estate, film, publishing, the arts, government, and law, to name a few. Many recent graduates are in the communications industry. Preparation for teacher certification is available through the Center for Teacher Education.
Faculty
English faculty members are professionally active, regularly publishing scholarly works, textbooks, novels, and poetry.
Internships & Study Abroad
Dedman College students get paid internships through the Hegi Family Career Development Center. Students majoring in English may be eligible to earn up to three (3) graded credits toward their degrees by enrolling for unpaid, faculty-directed internships through the Dedman College Internship Program.
Study abroad opportunities abound for SMU English majors. Choose from yearlong, semester, or summer programs at locations around the globe. English students may find the following study abroad programs especially helpful and interesting: SMU-in-Paris and SMU-in-Oxford.
