Related Majors and Minors
Economics easily combines with other majors. Areas that make good double-major pairs with economics include international studies, finance, financial consulting, management information systems, political science, and public policy.
Careers
Companies are increasingly hiring economics majors. Some SMU economics graduates have gone on to become economic analysts, internal auditors, project managers, investment banking analysts, and lawyers. Graduate school also can help further a career in economics.
Faculty
Economics faculty members are among the top names in economic research today. Recent projects have included sources of financial market volatility, intrahousehold resource allocation, and productivity in domestic and foreign industries. Many students assist faculty members in conducting research. All instructors place a high priority on teaching excellence and working closely with students.
Internships & Study Abroad
Dedman College students get paid internships through the Hegi Family Career Development Center. Students majoring in economics may be eligible to earn up to three (3) graded credits toward their degrees by enrolling for unpaid, faculty-directed internships through the Dedman College Internship Program.
Take your strong economics background beyond borders by participating in the SMU Study Abroad Program. Choose from yearlong, semester, or summer programs at locations around the globe that emphasize such courses as economics and political science. SMU-in-Copenhagen is particularly of interest to economics majors.
