Dedman College Majors
biochemistry

Modern biochemistry is interdisciplinary in nature, so you’ll take courses in physics, chemistry, mathematics, and biology. You’ll gain a complete understanding of the challenges scientists face in exploring the latest developments in molecular biology – like human genome sequencing. You’ll also take an active role in research, working with faculty in the new cutting-edge Dedman Life Sciences Building. Upon progressing to upper division courses, you can choose options that emphasize professional training for the ACS (American Chemical Society) certification in biochemistry, or choose a stronger emphasis on biology.
Degree Highlights
B.S.
in Biochemistry
Minimum 57 term hours of core courses and electives (about 19 classes)
Related Majors and Minors
Biochemistry majors can consider pursuing related disciplines, such as biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics. Other complementary fields include premedical studies and anthropology.
Careers
A biochemistry degree solidly prepares you for graduate work in areas such as genetics, biochemistry, physiology, and other life sciences – or you might choose to springboard to medical school, laboratory research, biotech firms, and biomedical engineering fields.
Faculty
Faculty members are experts in disciplines such as chemistry, mathematics, biology, and physics. Instructors are very accessible and research-oriented, eager to share their knowledge and time with students.
Internships & Study Abroad
Dedman College students get paid internships through the Hegi Family Career Development Center.
Biochemistry majors can expand their view of the world and the sciences through the SMU Study Abroad Program. Choose from yearlong, semester, or summer programs at locations around the world. You will find the SMU-in-Australia program especially helpful.
