The emphasis is on research concentrations in elementary particle physics
– both experimental and theoretical – as well as astrophysics
and cosmology. Undergraduates are strongly urged to do independent
research, or to conduct research alongside our internationally recognized
faculty; additional
off-campus research projects abound. Stephen Hawking, Leon Lederman, and other
physics luminaries (including 1980 Nobel Physics laureate and SMU alumus James
Cronin) have often visited SMU and met privately with physics majors.
What’s more, SMU’s Dallas location puts you in the midst of one
of the world’s top high-tech centers. The
Society of Physics Students performs demonstrations for area high school
classes and helps organize the Dallas Science Fair.
