Instructors are very dedicated to providing students with an outstanding, hands-on
foundation in such areas as cell biology, protein structure, biological nanotechnology,
and recombinant DNA techniques. Research
opportunities – working alongside faculty – are plentiful. The
new 68,000-square-foot Dedman Life Sciences Building is strictly state-of-the-art,
from its well-equipped laboratories and lecture halls to research facilities.
The Keck Laboratory and electron microscope
laboratories allow studies in gene transfection, cellular ultrastructure,
and other specialized initiatives. Field-based
environmental science and
botany labs include SMU-in-Taos.
The department recently received a $1 million grant from NASA’s Office
of Biological and Physical Research, which enabled the hiring of additional
faculty members
and helped establish modern laboratories for molecular biology research.
For students planning a career in biomedicine, SMU’s
BRITE Scholars Program (Biomedical Research In Training Experience)
is one of the premier programs of its kind in the country.
