The possibilities for scientific discovery are exciting in the Department of Biological Sciences at SMU. Our faculty comprises ome of the most active and inquisitive minds
    in the field.

Instructors are very dedicated to providing students with an outstanding, hands-on foundation in such areas as cell biology, protein structure, biological nanotechnology, and recombinant DNA techniques. Research opportunities – working alongside faculty – are plentiful. The new 68,000-square-foot Dedman Life Sciences Building is strictly state-of-the-art, from its well-equipped laboratories and lecture halls to research facilities. The Keck Laboratory and electron microscope laboratories allow studies in gene transfection, cellular ultrastructure, and other specialized initiatives. Field-based environmental science and botany labs include SMU-in-Taos. The department recently received a $1 million grant from NASA’s Office of Biological and Physical Research, which enabled the hiring of additional faculty members and helped establish modern laboratories for molecular biology research. For students planning a career in biomedicine, SMU’s BRITE Scholars Program (Biomedical Research In Training Experience) is one of the premier programs of its kind in the country.
