Transfer Planning
Long range planning will be key to your success at SMU. Our degree programs are designed to give you flexibility as well as the expertise you need to succeed. Talk with your academic adviser about how your course work transferred into our General Education Curriculum and into your desired major. Your adviser can help to show you how you can plan to maximize your course choices as you move into the SMU community.
You will not learn everything you need to know in your first meeting with your adviser, so plan on meeting with them a few times during your first semester to make sure you have a solid understanding of your academic requirements and plans.
Use the four-Year Planning and Semester Planning sections of this website to help you get started, and keep track of your questions for your adviser.
TIPS FOR SUCCESS
-
Meet with an Academic Adviser: It’s required, but you will find these meetings beneficial. You will gain valuable insight and information about classes, choices of majors and minors, and general education requirements of the university. Your academic adviser can also help you chart your plan toward graduation, so you finish all necessary requirements.
-
Read you catalog: The more informed you are, the better decisions you’ll make.
-
Go to class. You gain valuable information, and there is an attendance policy.
-
Keep track of your progress: Talk often with professors, and take advantage of office hours
-
Come with the anticipation of having a great experience.
