Information Technology Waiver
The exam is made up of 50 multiple-choice questions. Successful completion of the exam allows the student to waive the information technology degree requirement. A STUDENT MAY ONLY TAKE THE TEST ONE TIME. No credit hours are given for passing the exam. There is no charge for the exam. Bring with you a pencil or pen and a photo i.d.
The exam, which lasts an hour, covers basic information about computers and communications systems: hardware (input, output, processing, storage), software (system software and applications software), communications (channels, devices, networks), as well as social and ethical implications of information technology.
NEXT IT WAIVER EXAM:
At the
beginning of the fall term, the exam will be given twice: once on Monday, August
25, 2008 at 4:00 PM in Fondren Science 153, and once on Wednesday, August 27,
2008 at 5:00 PM in Fondren Science 123. Students should make sure to arrive on
time and to bring a pen or pencil, plus their SMU ID.
After this
date, the waiver exam will be given once in early November and twice at the
beginning of the Spring 2008 term.
Students who pass the exam will be considered to have satisfied the Information
Technology Requirement; however, the exam does not award course credit.
Students should allow an hour for the test, though most students finish early.
The exam covers basic information about computers and communication systems, how
they are used and how they work, with a special emphasis on Microsoft Word and
Excel software. Students are not expected to prepare in advance for the test;
the objective is simply to assess what they already know.
IMPORTANT NOTE: EACH STUDENT MAY TAKE THE TEST ONLY ONCE. AFTER THE TEST HAS
BEEN TAKEN ONCE, RETESTS AT ANY LATER DATE ARE NOT PERMITTED.
