General Education Curriculum

The General Education Curriculum (GEC) at a university is a core group of course requirements, which all students will fulfill.  At SMU the General Education Curriculum emphasize the values of what historically has been known as a liberal arts education.

The following outline gives a basic summary of the General Education Curriculum:

FUNDAMENTALS (12 credits)  - Fundamental courses consist of the following:

Mathematical Sciences (3 credits of one of the following courses is required)
    MATH 1307 - Introduction to Mathematical Sciences
    MATH 1309 - Introduction to Calculus for Business and Social Science
    MATH 1337 - Calculus with Analytic Geometry I
    Stat   1301 - Intro to Statistics

Written English (6 credits)
    ENGL 1301 - Introduction to College Writing
    ENGL 1302 - First Year Seminar Rhetoric:  Contemporary Issues

Information Technology (3 credits of the following courses is required)
    MSA 1315 - Media and Technology
    MSA 3360 - Multimedia Applications
    EMIS 1305 - Computers and Information Technology
    EMIS 1307 - Information Technology in Business
    CSE 1341 -   Principles of Computer Science
    ME 1305   -   Information Technology and Society

SCIENCE/TECHNOLOGY (6 credit credits) at least 3 credits must be in a Natural Science)

PERSPECTIVES (15 credits) Students must take one course from five of the six Perspective categories listed below:

  1. Arts 

  2. Literature

  3. Religious and Philosophical Thought

  4. History and Art History

  5. Politics and Economics

  6. Behavioral Sciences

CULTURAL FORMATIONS (6 credits)

HUMAN DIVERSITY CO-REQUIREMENT (6 credits)

WELLNESS (2 credits)

WELL 1101 Choices I   - Concepts of Wellness
WELL 21XXChoices II -  Wellness Activities
