We have an academic advising staff that enjoys working with SMU students to create academic plans that are individualized to maximize each student's undergraduate experience. We look forward to meeting our incoming class and working with each new and continuing student to the point of declaration.

Robert Pocklington is Associate Dean for Student Advising in Dedman College. He completed an M.F.A. at Southern Illinois University and a Ph.D. at the University of Texas, Arlington. Prior to assuming his role as director of the Dedman College Advising Center, he taught in SMU's Department of English for more than ten years.

Scott Bartlett received his B.A. and M.A. degrees from Baylor University and his Ph.D. from Southern Illinois University.  He teaches philosophy courses at SMU including Intro to Philosophy, American Philosophy, and Contemporary Moral Problems.  He enjoys playing with his sons Severin and Reese (he'll be happy to show you a picture!) and is an enthusiastic organic gardener.

Pamela Chiu received her B.A. from Purdue University and joined the Advising Center in 2002.  She has worked in secondary and higher education for over ten years including six years in the People's Republic of China and Hong Kong.  In addition to advising, Pamela enjoys studying Asian culture and listening to classical music.

Karen de Olivares joined the Advising Center in 1995 as an academic adviser.  She earned her B.A. from the University of California, Davis, her M.A. from California State University, Sacramento, and her Ph.D. from the University of Michigan.  For the past two spring terms she has taught Sociology 4399 and has written about her research on street gangs.  In addition to advising our pre-medical students, she spends time with her horse.

Janet Hopkins joined the Advising Center in 1999, but has been on the SMU campus since 1981.  Her experience as a Career adviser in the SMU Career Center enables her to help students with questions regarding career and internship opportunities.  A Dallas native, Janet received her B.A. degree from SMU and her M.S. degree from Texas A&M, Commerce.  Janet is currently restoring a home built in the early 1900s in the Monte Vista Historic District in San Antonio.

Eileen Hoy earned her B.S and M.S in Biology from the University of Louisiana at Monroe, formerly Northeast Louisiana University. She began advising at Texas A&M University at College Station in the Biochemistry Department in 2001 before joining the Dedman Advising Center this past summer. She has held many different jobs in her life but has found her passion in working with students.

Gwendolyn LaCroix joined the Advising Center in 2002. Before coming to SMU she held advising positions at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and the University of Cincinnati. Gwen also has experience working in municipal government. She received her B.A. in English Education from Xavier University and her M.S. in Educational Psychology from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. She enjoys cooking (gumbo, red beans and rice) reading, and watching college football/basketball games.

Judy McMaster joined SMU, and the Advising Center, in 1989.  She coordinates Pre-Law services and is available to talk with students who are interested in law studies, particularly those in the process of applying to law schools.  Judy adores Scottish terriers and has two of them.

Barbara Mohrle joined the Advising Center in 2002. She has a B.A. and M.A. in English from UT Arlington, where her son Chris is now attending. Before coming to SMU, Barbara taught English at Eastfield College for eleven years. Barbara’s favorite activities include playing with her black Lab, Sable, reading, writing short stories and poetry, cooking, and following the Dallas Stars.

Debbie Ortiz, after spending seven years as Administrative Assistant in the Advising Center, joined the Advising Staff as an Academic Adviser in June 2007.  She graduated from SMU in December of 2006 and plans to continue her study toward MBA in Accounting.

Jeanene Renfro received her B.A. degree from the University of Utah.  She helps high schools students and their families learn about Dedman College programs and people during the application process.  Jeanene keeps pace with three children, is a common poet, and enjoys the arts.  Read about Dedman College faculty research specializations while in her office.

Prisna Virasin earned her B.A. degree in Advertising from SMU and her M.A. in English from the University of Texas at Arlington. She has taught Argumentation Writing and Expository Composition at UTA. Her academic interests include studies in masculinities, Asian American fiction, and popular culture.
