Welcome to SMU!
A Message from Dean Neel

Most adults look back on their college years as the most liberating, challenging, and enjoyable time of their lives. I hope and expect that you will feel that way about SMU after you graduate.
By choosing SMU, you have chosen a first-rate, academically excellent private university located in a lovely neighborhood, convenient to the center of a great city. As you choose your first courses, meet the University's General Education requirements, and begin study in your major field, you will have the opportunity to study with an exceptionally fine faculty.
I encourage each of you to turn to the back of the Undergraduate Catalogue and read through the Dedman College faculty roster. Also take the time to look at the faculty in the school of your choice- Dedman College, Cox School of Business, Meadows School of the Arts, or the School of Engineering. You will see that SMU has assembled an extraordinarily diverse faculty trained at the world's great universities.
I encourage you to use these four years well. Be a little daring, explore courses and activities that interest you, seek out challenges that test your assumptions and your abilities. Your years at SMU will lay the foundation for your adult life. Be careful how you build that foundation. Make sure that its support is broad enough to accommodate unexpected growth and strong enough to anchor a life that, for the most of you, will extend more than six decades after graduation.
Jasper Neel
Dean, Dedman College
Vice Provost, SMU
