Position Information:

2 positions available. The Senior Designer position in Integrated Marketing is part of a team that produces professional high quality communication materials that support the University and the division of Development and External Affairs and their highest priorities including The Second Century Campaign, the upcoming University centennial celebration and other high profile events.

Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Handling all design related task from initial communications with client through archival of project;
  • Serving as primary contact and project manager for assigned department clients which includes obtaining estimates for jobs, building budgets, creating production schedules, presenting clients with concept/layouts, coordinating production including art direction with photographers and writers as necessary, communicating with clients and team members regarding job status;
  • Creating the graphic look and feel for assigned projects that establish their relationship with the SMU brand (products include brochures, newsletters, event programs, invitations, etc);
  • Overseeing production and attending press checks to assure quality of printing;
  • Recording time, approving vendor invoices, submitting work for archive, closing job and other duties as needed to support the team of Integrated Marketing.

    Education and Experience:

    Bachelor's degree is required, preferably a B.A. or B.F.A. in Visual Communications or other design field. A minimum of five years' work experience is required, preferably in creating marketing materials in a team environment.

    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

    Candidates must demonstrate proficiency with Quark, Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator. Must possess a strong working knowledge of FileMaker Pro and Microsoft Word.

    Candidates must demonstrate strong verbal and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to negotiate and manage the interest of multiple stakeholders. Must also demonstrate strong presentation skills. Strong written communication skills are essential.

    Candidates must possess the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously with the ability to develop effective solutions to marketing problems. Must possess the ability to work creatively and proactively in a team environment. The ability to be flexible and adapt quickly to changing priorities and deadlines is essential.

    Candidates must demonstrate a strong focus on attention to detail with the ability to transfer concepts into a visually appealing package with compelling copy. Must also possess strong organizational and time management skills.

    Experience with a Macintosh operation system in a professional work environment is preferred. Design experience for a nonprofit and/or in higher education is a plus.
