Christianity and the University The founders of our nation were the founders of our schools. They recognized even then that there is an essential link between a free society and a religious society. As a result, 104 of the first 119 colleges and universities founded in America were started by Christians.
As education has grown in its influence, its commitment to Christian moral and spiritual priorities has declined. This change moved the late Dr. Charles Malik, scholar statesman, to observe,
"The problem of the school and university is the most critical problem afflicting Western civilization."This situation presents the Christian professor with an unprecedented opportunity and duty to take a personal stand for Christian values and help foster a moral and spiritual dimension to education.
