Rare Navajo Textiles: Beauty, Harmony and Balance

Navajo textiles, including rugs, blankets, pots and jewelry, are prized by collectors all over the world for their beauty and unique quality. They truly are the great icons of Southwest Native Arts. In a rare, unforgettable class experience you will see firsthand and learn about these world-renowned textiles, including several of the rarest Navajo chief blankets in existence. And did you know that the SMU-in-Taos campus houses a rare collection of jewelry? You and your classmates will go on a treasure hunt to discover what riches the vault contains.

About the Instructor
Ray Trotter is one of the most sought-after experts in Navajo textiles. He has lectured on this topic everywhere from the Smithsonian to the MOMA. Trotter is a native of Paris,Texas, and has owned and operated the R. B. Ravens Gallery for the past 30 years. While the finest examples of Southwest Native Art are increasingly difficult to obtain, his long and trusted relationships with both the Pueblos and world-class collectors allow him to access Navajo textiles representing many styles and periods.
