Off the Beaten Path: The SMU-in-Taos Campus Revealed

This course, taught by Professor John Ubelaker – one of the most engaging, fun and popular SMU instructors – will show you what makes the SMU-in-Taos campus such a special place. You’ll discover a truly unique and educational campus with hidden archaeological sites, biological treasures and ecological mysteries. Uncover the history of Fort Burgwin and its relationship to the town of Taos.

About the Instructors
John Ubelaker has taught biology at SMU since 1974 and is the former chair of Biological Sciences in Dedman College. In 2005 he became director emeritus of SMU-in-Taos after serving as director for 13 years. Working with SMU undergraduate students, he is completing books on ferns, cacti and buttercups of the north-central region of New Mexico. Ubelaker earned his Ph.D. at Colorado State University in 1967.
