Faith in America: Secularism, Religion and Politics

This course will look at American civil religion as a vital resource for exploring intellectually and practically the interface between religion and politics in theU.S. The initial aim will be to identify the history, content and logic of American civil religion. This, in turn, will be developed to cast fresh light on the debate about secularism in America. Finally, we will look at the possibilities and problems civil religion encounters in the assimilation of new immigrants, including Muslim immigrants.
