| DIVISION NEWS DeGolyer Library The Lowell Press of Kansas City, Missouri, recently donated its historical archives to the DeGolyer Library. The Lowell Press was active from 1913-1994. Established by S.K. Lowell, the business was expanded and maintained by three generations of the family. Arthur E. Lowell, the son of the founder, joined the firm in 1925; Payson W. Lowell, Arthur’s son, joined the company in 1955. Lowell Press handled everything from small job printing in Kansas City to major national productions such as The Hereford Journal. In addition to its commercial work, the Lowell Press was one of the most distinguished publishers of books on Western history in the 20th century, with over 100 titles to its credit, including Bell Ranch as I Knew It (1973) and Tallgrass Prairie: The Inland Sea (1978). Lowell Press books won numerous awards for their historical merits as well as their graphic design. Included among the Lowell Press records are correspondence and production files for each title. In addition to business files and financial records, the Lowell Press collection includes comprehensive samples of the output of the press, from ephemeral brochures to books. Also of interest are numerous photographs, providing a visual record of the evolution of printing technology in the 20th century. Payson W. Lowell has also donated his personal library on the graphic arts, a collection of several hundred works, including type specimen books and long runs of printing journals. The Lowell Press collection will be useful for students and scholars interested in the history of commercial printing, regional publishing, and the graphic arts. DeGolyer Library thanks the Lowell family for making these materials accessible, and we especially thank Nancy Lowell George, of SMU’s Office of Public Affairs, for encouraging her father to consider the DeGolyer as a home for this extraordinary collection. Watch for DeGolyer Library to appear in an upcoming episode of Fox Television’s “Prison Break.” Stacey Keach and other show regulars spent July 5 filming on site as the Texana Room became a court room. We won’t reveal the verdict.

Goodbye, Sherilyn, and best of luck! On July 6th, CUL staff said a heartfelt goodbye to Sherilyn Bird, who, after 20 years of hard work and dedication to CUL, has accepted a new position as the Director of Libraries, Texas Women's University in Denton.
More Goodbyes! At a farewell celebration on June 8th, CUL staff said goodbye to Gin Johnstone and Sonia Graff. Gin worked in CIP for 3 years, and Sonia, who worked in CIP for almost 8 years, most recently led the Continuations Team. Sonia moved to Idaho with her husband, Robert, who has taken a position as an epidemiologist for the Idaho State Department of Health and Welfare. CUL also said goodbye to Joe Milazzo on July 17th. Joe has held a variety of positions in CUL since June 1990, and he advanced to Library Specialist IV. His most recent position was Government Information Resources and Maps Librarian. Joe will pursue his MFA in writing at the California Institute of the Arts Writing Program. We wish Gin, Sonia and Joe our best! New Development Officer Anne Brabham, CUL's new Development Officer, began work at SMU on Tuesday, May 30. Anne is responsible for soliciting external funding and support, overseeing annual fund raising and capital campaign activities, and managing donor databases, mailings, and solicitations. Anne's previous experience includes coordinating federally mandated training programs at UT Southwestern, Volunteer Coordinator for the Martin Frost Campaign, and Assistant Executive Director for the Dallas County Democatic Party where she managed fundraising events, volunteers, and pledge. CUL is delighted to have her on staff. Please welcome her to SMU! Wedding Announcement - McCombs-Bauer
Gillian McCombs and Richard Halsey of Dallas, TX and Philip McCombs of Washington, D.C. announce the engagement of their daughter, Margaret B. McCombs of Saratoga Springs, New York, to Eric J. Bauer of Arlington, Virginia. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Bauer of Arlington, and the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Franklin Summerson of Marion, Ohio. Ms. McCombs and Mr. Bauer are both graduates of Pratt Institute with BFA degrees; the bride-to-be is a film and television producer in New York City, and the future groom is a motion graphics designer in NYC. He also graduated from McLean High School in McLean, Virginia. The couple is planning to marry on September 24th in Brooklyn, and will make their home there after honeymooning in Paris, France. Welcome, Sofia! Theresa and Ryan Meyers are getting acquainted with their new baby, Sofia Isabelle, who arrived on May 19th.
Congratulations to Ellen Buie Niewyk! Ellen recently accepted an invitation to serve on the board for the Dallas Public Art Project Committee for the city of Dallas. This committee decides on acquiring the artworks to be installed in public buildings across the city of Dallas. Her first meeting was July 7th. Not only did Ellen guess the exact day when Theresa and Ryan's daughter, Sofia Isabelle, would arrive, she also very nearly guessed the correct weight. Here are her predictions:

-- correct Staff Vacations Ellen Buie Niewyk and her husband, Don, went to Key West, Florida in June. Their trip to Florida completed Ellen's travel to all of the fifty states in the U. S. One of the highlights of their trip was a visit to Ernest Hemingway's house where they saw the infamous six-toed cats.
