We
are happy to announce that we have filled the new Digital Content Manager
position. Dennis Moser has accepted our offer and began his new
position here on March 22.
This position
is funded from SMU UCIT Technology staffing funds to provide a new
position to develop and manage digital library projects in
collaboration with special collections staff, ITS, CUL Systems, the
Digitization Committee, faculty, library Web writers, and others.
Key responsibilities to assure initial success include pulling
together and making accessible all information on current projects
(exhibit level pages and Web pages with digital content), creation of
standards and templates to put regular exhibits online and to plan for new
projects, development of a prioritized list of projects to submit to the
CUL Executive Committee and other appropriate SMU Libraries management for
approval to assure that all digitization projects are included in
management review, follow established standards, and are made accessible
to our users (faculty, staff, and students).
Dennis
Moser received his MILS in
1993 from the University of Michigan and completed the coursework for a
graduate certificate Museum Practices Program in 1994. At the
University of Michigan, he was the president and co-founder of the student
chapter of the Society of American Archivists. He completed a Mellon
Internship at the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, D. C., on book
conservation and hand-bookbinding studies in 1988. Since that time
he has attended a number of workshops related to digitization, including Encoded
Archival Description, style sheets for EAD for delivering finding aids on
the Web, and electronic texts in XML. He has a background in the
areas of archives, rare book conservation, and preservation. He has
been a senior staff analyst with experience as a technical librarian, Web
site developer, technical writer, network analyst, instructor, project
photo-archivist, research assistant, and desktop publishing coordinator.
His skills in conservation and archives include photographic archives
processing, special collections housing and treatments, information
technology applications, disaster response, treatment documentation, and
training. He is currently employed as an Archivist II in
Archives at the Houston Metropolitan Research Center, Houston Public
Library. He was Project Director/Digital Imaging Faculty on an
IMLS National Leadership Grant: "From Local to Global" at Lee
College, Sterling Municipal Public Library and the Baytown Historical
Museum from 2001 - 2003. Other prior positions include Web
Librarian at the John P. McGovern Historical Collections and Research Center
at the Houston Academy of Medicine -- Texas Medical Center Library, project
photo-archivist at the Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village in Dearborn
Michigan and others. He has made a number of presentations at
national and international conferences and has numerous publications.

CHANGING THE LIGHT SWITCHES
SMU Campus Planning and Plant
Operations will begin to change out light switches in offices that will
accommodate motion sensitive light switches. This is an energy conservation
effort across campus. For every single occupant office where the light
switch is in clear line of sight of the desk or work area, the switch will
be replaced with the motion detector type that is presently in the public
restroom in Fondren Library East.
The timers will be set at 15
minutes (no motion within 15 minutes, the light automatically goes out) but
CPPO reports that they are very sensitive to movement, even as slight as
blinking. Public Services staff have observed users confused as to whether
the restroom lights will come on automatically, but this confusion is
probably because if they are turned off or on manually the switches remain
in manual mode.
The change-out of office switches
within CUL will probably begin the end of next week. It will include FLE,
FLW, SIC, Hamon, DeGolyer, CMIT and ISEM. These changes will only occur in
personal, private offices - not CIP, stack areas, computer labs, workrooms
or public areas.
We are asked to cooperate with this
effort for the sake of conservation, energy efficiency and savings. However,
CPPO has made assurances that no one will be made to be miserable. Our
