SMU Libraries Staff Recognition Awards will be presented. The Committee for the SMU Libraries Staff Recognition Awards is seeking nominations for the 2003/2004 awards. The awards recognize outstanding contributions to the Libraries, service to library users, and/or to the library profession. This year there are four awards carrying a monetary prize of $500 each. General considerations and criteria for these awards are given below. All members of the SMU library staff (except the Council of Library Directors and those who have won the award within the previous two years) are eligible for the awards as defined in the criteria. The Awards Committee encourages any member of the SMU Community to submit nominations. The Awards Committee will maintain confidentiality with regard to all nominations and will vote by secret ballot. The Committee will make recommendations for recipients of the awards to the Council of Library Directors, who will make the final decisions. Nominations are due by 5:00 pm, Monday, April 19, 2004. Please submit nominations using the electronic form at http://www.smu.edu/libraries/award.html or pick up a paper form from any campus library and deliver it to Room 300, Fondren Library East (Attn: Mary Ann Herbel) or send it to the following address: Awards

FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARIES SCHOLARSHIP:

FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARIES GRANT:
Once again, it's time to submit grant requests to the Friends of the SMU Libraries. It's your opportunity to get funding for a special library project or acquisition. The Grants Committee of the Friends will meet at the end of April to discuss distribution of funds to the SMU libraries. They will present their recommendations to the Friends board at the May board meeting. Traditionally, grants are awarded to purchase materials and/or to fund services or projects that are not within the usual library operating budgets. Because of the successful fundraising associated with Tables of Content, we are able to offer $25,000 for grants this year. Please note that we usually receive requests that total more than the funds we have available. Therefore, it is possible that some requests may not be granted or that some may be partially funded. After discussions with your staffs and supervisor, please submit your requests to Judy Searles by Monday, April 19, 2004. Indicate the dollar amount of your proposal and submit the written requests through the Friends Office, Room 300, Fondren Library East or email requests to jsearles@mail.smu.edu. If you have any questions, call Judy Searles at ext. 83225. |

WELCOME
We are happy to announce that we have filled the new Digital Content Manager position. Dennis Moser has accepted our offer and began his new position here on March 22. This position is funded from SMU UCIT Technology staffing funds to provide a new position to develop and manage digital library projects in collaboration with special collections staff, ITS, CUL Systems, the Digitization Committee, faculty, library Web writers, and others. Key responsibilities to assure initial success include pulling together and making accessible all information on current projects (exhibit level pages and Web pages with digital content), creation of standards and templates to put regular exhibits online and to plan for new projects, development of a prioritized list of projects to submit to the CUL Executive Committee and other appropriate SMU Libraries management for approval to assure that all digitization projects are included in management review, follow established standards, and are made accessible to our users (faculty, staff, and students). Dennis Moser received his MILS in 1993 from the University of Michigan and completed the coursework for a graduate certificate Museum Practices Program in 1994. At the University of Michigan, he was the president and co-founder of the student chapter of the Society of American Archivists. He completed a Mellon Internship at the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, D. C., on book conservation and hand-bookbinding studies in 1988. Since that time he has attended a number of workshops related to digitization, including Encoded Archival Description, style sheets for EAD for delivering finding aids on the Web, and electronic texts in XML. He has a background in the areas of archives, rare book conservation, and preservation. He has been a senior staff analyst with experience as a technical librarian, Web site developer, technical writer, network analyst, instructor, project photo-archivist, research assistant, and desktop publishing coordinator. His skills in conservation and archives include photographic archives processing, special collections housing and treatments, information technology applications, disaster response, treatment documentation, and training. He is currently employed as an Archivist II in Archives at the Houston Metropolitan Research Center, Houston Public Library. He was Project Director/Digital Imaging Faculty on an IMLS National Leadership Grant: "From Local to Global" at Lee College, Sterling Municipal Public Library and the Baytown Historical Museum from 2001 - 2003. Other prior positions include Web Librarian at the John P. McGovern Historical Collections and Research Center at the Houston Academy of Medicine -- Texas Medical Center Library, project photo-archivist at the Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village in Dearborn Michigan and others. He has made a number of presentations at national and international conferences and has numerous publications.

CHANGING THE LIGHT SWITCHES
SMU Campus Planning and Plant Operations will begin to change out light switches in offices that will accommodate motion sensitive light switches. This is an energy conservation effort across campus. For every single occupant office where the light switch is in clear line of sight of the desk or work area, the switch will be replaced with the motion detector type that is presently in the public restroom in Fondren Library East. The timers will be set at 15 minutes (no motion within 15 minutes, the light automatically goes out) but CPPO reports that they are very sensitive to movement, even as slight as blinking. Public Services staff have observed users confused as to whether the restroom lights will come on automatically, but this confusion is probably because if they are turned off or on manually the switches remain in manual mode. The change-out of office switches within CUL will probably begin the end of next week. It will include FLE, FLW, SIC, Hamon, DeGolyer, CMIT and ISEM. These changes will only occur in personal, private offices - not CIP, stack areas, computer labs, workrooms or public areas. We are asked to cooperate with this effort for the sake of conservation, energy efficiency and savings. However, CPPO has made assurances that no one will be made to be miserable. Our contact at CPPO for this project is Tejas Pevekar at 214-683-5353 (cell phone). |

APRIL BIRTHDAYS HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!

Carol Baker and Nancy Rubenstein recently enjoyed a day of renewing old friendships while participating in the 75th anniversary celebration of their Dallas alma mater, Woodrow Wilson, on March 6. After a parade from Lakewood Shopping Center to the school, graduates and friends of the school participated in the Hall of Fame ceremony and mini-class reunions. Constructed in 1928 this school is significant as an excellent example of the Jacobean Revival Architectural Style. This high school boasts nearly 24,000 graduates who include seven Dallas area mayors, two Heisman Trophy winners, and numerous other political and commercial leaders in the City of Dallas
