In March of 2002, the Government Information Resources (GIR) Department finalized an agreement with Mr. Melvin Shaffer, a former United States Army photographer who served with the Museum and Medical Arts Service during the Second World War, to take possession of approximately 340 personal photographs depicting the local conditions of North Africa, Italy, Southern France, and Germany from the years 1943 to 1945. Upon accession, these photographs -- negatives, prints, and digitized images created by the photographer himself from these original source materials -- became a component of CUL's pilot digital library project, "Historic Government Publications from the Second World War (1939 - 1945)". The entire collection, annotated by Mr. Shaffer himself, has now been made accessible via the World Wide Web at:

• The Jerry Bywaters Collection on Art of the Southwest is loaning several items to the Dallas Museum of Art for its upcoming exhibition, The Gilded Age: Treasures from the Smithsonian American Art Museum (Nov. 2, 2002-Jan. 12, 2003).  These items document art instruction in Dallas in the decades immediately prior to and following the turn of the twentieth century.  They include two photographs of students sketching in the Vivian Aunspaugh art school, one of Dallas' first organized venues for art instruction.  Another of Dallas' earliest art teachers, E.G. Eisenlohr, is represented by two medals that he won in Texas State Fair art competitions in the 1890s; one of the medals is inscribed "Eisenlohr, 1891."  The fifth item being loaned is a catalog of the classes given by the Dallas School of Fine Arts, 1899-1900, which was operated by Frank Reaugh from his Oak Cliff home.  Reaugh taught in Dallas for several decades and his students included such notable Dallas artists as Reveau Bassett, John Douglas, Otis Dozier, Lloyd Goff, Alexandre Hogue, and Florence McClung.
• Ellen Buie-Niewyk (Hamon Arts Library) and Barbara Stockton (CIP) just completed a preservation effort on some booklet catalogs for the Dallas Museum of Art to use for exhibition purposes. Joel Eatmon (FLC Collection Development) and Cammie Vitale-Shuman (DeGolyer) instructed Ellen and Barbara in the basic steps of preservation for the booklets. Metal staples, which had rusted and were eating through the paper, were removed first. The booklet pages were then deacidified in order to minimize the deterioration, and torn and ragged edges were mended. Finally, the booklets were reassembled by being sewn together using linen thread. Booklets with metal spiral bindings required additional care, and Sally Key (Bridwell) provided in-depth training for those. In addition to deacidifying and mending the paper, Ellen and Barbara created folders to support and protect the booklets.

Over Fall Break (Monday, October 14, and Tuesday, October 15), plan to join your CUL colleagues as we clean out Fondren Library Center, Hamon, DeGolyer, and CMIT Libraries. Our goal is to identify and clear out all broken, obsolete, and just plain ugly equipment, furniture, and supplies - and have fun while we are doing it!

Please e-mail Carol Baker or Shannon Cain the area you would like to focus on in this project. Particular areas that are being targeting include, but are not limited, to:

• Science basement
• Third floor Fondren storage
• Fourth floor Fondren storage closet
• Vacated offices and service areas

Staff should concentrate on identifying items for discard ("items", NOT coworkers or supervisors!), which will be carried away by SMU movers. TIDY janitorial staff will be on hand to do heavy cleaning as storage/work areas are cleared.

For Fondren Library Center, this cleaning and clearing effort will be the initial kickoff to a space study that will lead to a full building renovation

Dress will be "Clean Chic" - grubby jeans, comfortable (and safe) shoes. All participants in Project Clean Sweep will receive a complimentary CUL polo shirt and a free lunch. Non-participants will have the opportunity to purchase a shirt.

Since we will be open both these two days to provide basic services, staff covering service desks while others clean and clear will be eligible for polo shirts and food.

Peter Ligon: The New York Drypoints, August 19 through December 15, 2002, Mildred Hawn Gallery, Hamon Arts Library

The Pollock Gallery, Division of Art, in conjunction with the Mildred Hawn Gallery, Hamon Arts Library presents over twenty drypoint etchings by Southern Methodist University alumnus Peter Ligon. The show brings together, for the first time, works the artist has executed during regular yearly sojourns to New York City over the last eight years. The drypoint process has allowed Ligon to intimately record on copper plates his personal and keenly felt observations of both the built and natural landscape of New York City. The exhibition is curated by Shannon Phillips, Assistant to the Director at the Dallas Center for Contemporary Art (Ms. Phillips served as the Pollock Curatorial Intern for 2001-2002) and Philip Van Keuren, Director of the Pollock Gallery and Assistant Professor of Art and Curatorial Studies, Division of Art, Meadows School of the Arts.

The Mildred Hawn Gallery, located inside the Hamon Arts Library, is open Monday through Friday from 9:00am to 5:00pm. For more information, please contact Sam Ratcliffe (x82303).
