LEAD Program: Collection Development - Working with Departments and Faculty
March 28, 12:30-1:45, DeGolyer Library, Texana Room
The focus of Curt Holleman's LEAD program on March 28 will be collection development. This program will cover the basics of how funds get divided, the new arrangement (with Science), and working with faculty. The program will touch briefly on how the faculty liaison system facilitates collection development.

The Fondren Library Center Exhibits Committee would like to highlight the interests of CUL staff again this coming summer.  This is a good opportunity for our patrons and colleagues to learn more about staff members who work in the Central University Libraries.  Last year, Dave Schmidt displayed portions of his Disney memorabilia collection and Troy Sherrod shared his interest in local theaters.  If you have a collection that you would like to exhibit, we would like to hear from you.  If you are interested, please submit an Exhibit Request Form.  Due to limited exhibit space, the Fondren Library Center Exhibit Committee will not be able to accommodate all requests this summer.  If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact me.  The deadline for submission is April 16.

Hamon Wins Rothschild Grant for Mural Conservation
The Jerry Bywaters Collection on Art of the Southwest has received a grant of $7,500 from the Judith Rothschild Foundation of New York City to conserve seven mural studies executed by Jerry Bywaters in the 1930s and 1940s.  These drawings comprised some of Bywaters' submissions to competitions to select muralists for post offices and other public buildings under the auspices of the U.S. government's Public Works of Art Project.  Bywaters received more PWAP commissions for post office murals in Texas than any other artist and his murals are still in their original locations at U.S. post offices in Houston, Farmersville, Quanah, and Trinity, Texas.  The seven works to be conserved include one of his sketches for Quanah as well as those for unsuccessful submissions for public buildings in San Antonio, Longview, and El Paso.   These works have rarely, if ever, been on public view and completion of this project will make them available for research and exhibition.  Conservation will remove discolorations due to water damage/foxing, and mend tears in the works.  Each restored piece will be framed and/or matted and stored in flat museum cases.  Matting and framing will be done on site by Ellen Buie Niewyk or contracted to Bill Daly Framing, a firm having extensive experience in framing works for museums and private collections in the Dallas area.  After conservation is complete, a permanent photographic record will be made, for the purposes of digitization, so that researchers will be able to access the images without handling the original works.

CUL Donations Appreciated
Those of you who donated items for earthquake victims in El Salvador will be interested in the following message from Kelly Lee of Airline Ambassadors International, who brought your donations to those in need:

"I just got back from El Salvador on Thurs. night.  What a wonderful and emotional trip it was.  Yes, we were there on Tues morning when the 2nd eathquake hit on the 1 month anniversary of the first one.  We were heading up to the little village when it hit. Almost 300 people were killed so far.  We revisited some of the orphanages we were at last month and evaluated their damage.  We visited people on the streets and passed out aid and even a few Valentine goody bags just to give some kind of cheer to the community.  Our group of 17 doctors saw about 800 patients a day and treated them in the tent cities.  One of the biggest problems was helping the people to deal with the shock.  Every little tremor would frighten them tremendously. The items you and your co-workers sent were GREATLY appreciated.  They really helped these people that are having to literally start from scratch. I can not thank you enough for all your help. "

Spotlight on: Amy Carver Originally from Enid, OK, Amy Carver moved to Dallas in 1990 to attend SMU where she majored in advertising. Following graduation in 1994, Amy worked as a Retail Development Coordinator and later as Special Events Manager for the Dallas Market Center. In 1995, she went to work for KERA where she spent five years planning fund-raising events ranging from Barney live at Reunion Arena to wine-tastings and auctions. Recently, Amy spent a year at home following the birth of her son, Tucker, who is now 19 months old.  Amy has been married to Dion, her high school sweetheart, for eight years. Dion is a Golf Teaching Professional in Southlake. Amy enjoys spending time with family and friends (and her two dogs, Molly and Boomer), jogging, reading and shopping. Amy started on Monday, March 5. Her hours are all day on Monday and Thursday and Tuesday mornings. Her office is Room 312 in Fondren (the old Fort Burgwin library office), and her phone 8-1939.

Theresa Van Goethem Meyers will be performing in a recital on March 24th at 2:00pm in O'Donnel Hall at Meadows. Theresa is taking a voice class at Meadows through their continuing education program.  She will be singing 2 solos: "And All That Jazz" from the Musical Chicago and "I'd Give My Life For You" from the Musical Miss Saigon.

Dave Schmidt (FLC Periodicals) will be performing in a new show at the Irving Performing Arts Center.  The show is "Communicating Doors" by one of Britain's most prolific playwrites, Alan Ayckbourn.  It's a really great script full of humor, murder and time travel.  Who could ask for more?  The show will open Friday, March 23 and run for three weekends closing
Saturday April 7. Dave says, "I play maybe the most black-hearted character I've ever had the chance to perform, and I'm loving it.  Finally get to show my true colors on stage.  ;-)"

Bruce Evans, CIP, attended the Music OCLC User Group (MOUG) and Music Library Association conferences in New York City February 20-24.  The MOUG meeting included a score cataloging workshop, a session on CORC, and a review of OCLC Macros.  Bruce will encore his membership on the MOUG Program Committee for next year's MOUG meeting in Las Vegas.  Some highlights of the MLA meeting were the Technical Services Roundtable, which conducted an informal survey to determine the work environment of the attending music catalogers (i.e. is our tech. services centralized or decentralized, have we moved to a new system, have we reorganized our department recently, etc.).  There were also sessions on changes in MARC formats and descriptive cataloging for music, and a workshop on the characteristics of the successful music librarian.  Bruce is the new chair of the Texas Chapter of MLA, and he facilitated the Texas Chapter meeting at MLA.
 

EXHIBITS

Mexican Dances
From March 12-May 25, the Hawn Gallery will exhibit selections from Mexican Dances, a portfolio of illustrations depicting dances and indigenous dance costumes from the regions of Mexico; the portfolio also contains examples of musical accompaniments for the dances.  The portfolio was published by Mexico City's Riveroll's Art Gallery in 1947. This exhibition is one of the events of SMU's "Spanish academic year," held in conjunction with the opening of the university's new facility for the Meadows Museum in March 2001.

Don Quixote: A Spanish Legend

A joint effort of Stephen Short and SMU Professors Bonnie Wheeler (Professor of English & Director of the Medieval Studies Program) and Eric Kartchner (Assistant Professor of Spanish), this exhibit is part of the celebration of SMU's "Spanish Academic Year," held in conjunction with the opening of the University's new Meadows Museum. The exhibit features faculty essays on the life of Miguel de Cervantes and his character Don Quixote, along with a selection of rare, old and illustrated books related to the author and his famous novel. Selections from  Fondren Library collection inlcude an item signed by Salvador Dali. If you are interested, see also the digital exhibit Don Quixote de La Mancha at Johns Hopkins University.
