LEAD Brown Bag Discussion: IT Support & Services
Gillian McCombs will lead a discussion on possible future models for CUL Information Technology support.  This is your time to discuss how the Systems Office can provide CUL with consistent, collaborative IT support.  The brown bag luncheon will be followed by an EC  meeting to reflect on the feedback. Mary will send a bibliography next week of recommended pre-brown bag readings. When: Friday, July 14, 2000 @ Noon - 1:30. Where: CIP Conference Room, Fondren Library Center. Soda, coffee, water and cookies will be provided.

DIVISION NEWS

Announcements from CMIT:

The Documentary Showcase is on hiatus until the Fall but we have some great ideas for films to show. These films have historically been shown on Fridays at noon, but please let us know if another day would be better for you.

Reminder: CUL staff can check out movies free of charge. Overnight during the week (out after 2 pm, due by 2 pm) and  films checked out on Friday are not due back until 2 pm Monday. We have a great selection of classics and eclectic offerings as well as popular contemporary films.

News from John Phinney in ISEM:
We are working on the processing of gift items at ISEM LIBRARY this month. We do not  have much time or speace to do this in Spring and Fall terms. I have been able to add gift items to ISEM Library, Fondren Library Center (Fondren & Science) and items to the Fort Burgwin library.  We are also working with CIP in the cataloguing of the Hedberg collection and it is going well thanks to the hard work of Margie Steel-Fuller. This is an on-going project and we are hoping to have much of it done by the end of the Summer. Finally, I am working on the development of the non-human primate collections. This is made possible by gift money from the Anthropology Department.

News from Fondren Library Center
Reference Merger Update:  Most of the shifting is complete, with the exception of two large Science index sets.  Reference librarians are now staffing a single service desk in Fondren Library Center. All seems to be going very well and users are finding the materials they need. Please give a word of thanks to Melanie Golder and Steve Short, who have done a fabulous job of coordinating all the planning and moving.

From the CUL Executive Committee:
CU Librarian's Report:  Gillian has revised the CUSP documents in light of the recent focus group meeting comments.  The "Strategic Directions" document will need reformatting and Curt will work with Mary Q. on this before sending it out to CUSP for final feedback.  When all documents are final, a CUL staff meeting will be held for presentation.

SPARC:  Kris Murphy brought up the new ACRL/ARL/SPARC initiative called "Create Change." This initiative in designed to help libraries guide faculty toward solutions to the scholarly communications crisis that is affecting journal publishing and pricing.  There is no cost for participation in this program; to learn more about this program, visit their web site: http://www.createchange.org

CUL Committees:   CUL-wide committees were revisited; inactive committees were removed.  It was agreed that there needs to be a distinction between "standing committees" and "task forces" and that a process for rotation on committees should be put into place.  The three electronic resource/web committees (ERAcc, BCER, and Web Group) will be reviewed, since
there is much overlap; these revisions will be taken up again in August once the organizational chart and position descriptions are finalized.  It will be easier to review charges, composition, and leadership in committees once the organizational changes are in place.

News from Hamon
Tim Silcox announced that there is interest in preservation of the Tyler Collection by Alpha Kappa Alpha.  Two of the films from this collection will be presented on July 14th, followed by a reception.

In the Spotlight: Erika Ripley On June 5, the Science/Engineering Library welcomed a new Reference & Periodicals Librarian, Erika Ripley. Erika moved to Dallas from her home town of Norman, Oklahoma, because she has friends in the area and wanted to stay in the Great Plains region. Erika has a B.A. in Anthropology and Women's Studies, as well as a Master's in Library and Information Studies (MLIS), both from the University of Oklahoma. While working on her MLIS, Erika worked for a year as a technology trainer for the Gates Foundation, traveling to public libraries in Oklahoma to train library staff in using computer equipment and software donated by the Foundation.  Erika's hobbies are vegetable gardening and vegetarian cooking (Erika is looking for recommendations on the best places to eat in Dallas, especially for Mexican food). Of course, she also likes to read and is a big fan of the Harry Potter books. Erika has two "fat and spoiled" cats who are completely devoted to their mom, who rescued them both from certain death. Erika pulled one mewling kitten, Orson, from a dumpter, and picked up another abandoned kitty, Max, from the side of an Oklahoma state highway.  Erika's office is currently in the Science/Engineering Library, Rm.212. Her telephone extension is x84016, and her email is eripley@mail.smu.edu. Please join us in making her feel welcome!

Dave Aponte (CIP) will be on tour with bands Fantastic Eddie and Razorwire for two and a half weeks on the East Coast of the U.S. this month.

Melanie Lenhart joined CIP on June 19th as a member of the Requisitions Team.  Melanie is a graduate of Texas A&M University.  She has earned 9 hours towards a Masters in Library Science and has worked as a Library Specialist.

On June 23rd, Chris Brown left his position as Administrative Assistant in the Hamon Arts  Library.  Chris now works for the Meadows School of the Arts and can be reached through  Meadows Marketing.  We all want to wish Chris good luck in his new position.

Troy Sherrod (Fondren Periodicals) is a Contributing Writer for the Daily Campus this summer. Look for his articles in the online DC at http://www.smudailycampus.com. In the June 27 issue, he contributed the article "McCord's theater collection quietly waiting in Hamon Arts Library," about Hamon's special collections.

Theresa Van Goethem-Meyers sang the National Anthem at the Burn soccer game.
 

EXHIBITS

Still on display in the Fondren Library Center is Dave Schmidt's "45 Years of Disney" exhibit, a colorful collection of Disneyland souvenirs and memorabilia.

Also on display in Fondren Library Center is the continuing "Books of the Millenium" exhibit.

Still on display in the Bridwell Library is The Second Helen Warren DeGolyer Triennial Exhibition and Award for American Bookbinding. The exhibition is a juried show drawn from a competition to design a binding for an important book in Bridwell's collections. The book for the 2nd Triennial is the first edition of James Joyce's Ulysses - a seminal work, recently named the most significant book of the twentieth century. This exhbit runs Friday 6/16/00 - Saturday 8/12/00.
 

HUMOR

The Hamon Art Library's own Music/Theater/Dance Librarian, Alicia Snee graced the front page of the Today section of the Dallas Morning News on Wed., June 21st.  Alicia was interviewed for  the article titled 'Women with hairy legs and the men who love them'.  The photograph that accompanied the article shows Alicia jumping in the air with the Dallas skyline in the background.
