Welcome to the Central University Libraries! Supporting the research, teaching and learning needs of SMU students, faculty and staff is our primary goal. We hope that you will enjoy your experience here - either literally in one of our libraries or virtually through the Internet - and that you find the resources and support you need.
During this Year of the Faculty, we want to thank all of our wonderful faculty members for their support and let you know that we are here to support you. We encourage all faculty members to work with your liaison librarians to strengthen your teaching and research activities. Faculty in every field can share their outstanding scholarship with a wide audience via the SMU Digital Repository (contact email@example.com).
CUL has recently purchased access to a number of specialized resources in support of the university’s teaching and research needs. Early American Newspapers, 1690-1922 provides access to more than 2,000 historical newspapers from all 50 states published during the 18th, 19th, and early 20th centuries. SMU is a member of the Chicago-based Center for Research Libraries (CRL), a partnership of more than 200 university, college, and independent research libraries. CRL'S collection comprises more than 5 million items which can be borrowed through Interlibrary Loan for 6 months with unlimited renewals. Finally, CUL has added a number of exciting new resources, including additional JSTOR modules, the Berg Fashion Library and our new e-book platform, EBL, a user-friendly interface to nearly 4,000 e-books in all subject areas.
This is a very exciting time for the SMU libraries! Over the next two years, we will be engaged in a major renovation of the Fondren Library Center Complex. The target date for project completion and the dedication of the facility is May of 2016. We are still raising funds for the project and appreciate the support of all of our donors. We are anxious to involve as many of our users in this process as possible, so please let me know if you are willing to be called upon. A User Group has been convened with 26 members representing all constituencies in the SMU family.
We welcome feedback from you, our users, at all times. Feel free to email me personally at firstname.lastname@example.org, or use any of our various online Ask-a-Librarian services. You can always keep up with 'all things library' by checking out our Browsing Forward newsletter. We also have a student forum that meets monthly during the semester for pizza and discusses ways to enhance the student library experience. If you are interested in joining, contact Hollie Gardner, User Experience Librarian, or visit the CUL Student Advisory Council page for more information. And if you are lonely for a human face, come and see me. My office is located on the third floor of Fondren Library East, room 300.
