Controversy & Disagreement in Classroom Discussion

Wed., April 6th, 2004
3:15 pm
McCord Auditorium, 3rd Floor, Dallas Hall

The university may be the last place in U.S. society where civil disagreements can occur.

  • Are your classes too civil?
  • Do you think students merely say what they think teachers want to hear?
  • Whatever happened to impassioned argument?

But not everyone may know how to engage in this sort of exchange, nor can we all imagine the benefits it can provide. We invite you to come talk about how members of the SMU community, both students and faculty alike, can create learning environments that promote civil conversation, perspective-taking, and listening to each other.

Please join Professors Vanessa Beasley - Corp. Communications & Public Affairs, Dennis Simon - Political Science, and Maria Dixon - Corp. Communications & Public Affairs, as they discuss these topics.
