Undergraduate research at SMU engages students along two dimensions. First, it involves undergraduate students in faculty research projects (for examples, see SMU’s undergraduate research assistant (URA) program, the Physics department, and the Tower Center). Second, it introduces undergraduates to the exciting possibilities of research as part of the classroom experience in the form of term papers, creative writing and design projects, etc. While the former is typically reserved for a handful of high achieving students, the latter is open to everyone enrolled in a course. The panelists will discuss the possibilities and limitations of both types of student research activities, the past and current availability and funding situation at SMU, as well as future needs in terms of financial and institutional support.
Join panelists Bill Bridge/Law (moderator), Steve Edwards/Advertising, Carolyn Smith-Morris/Anthropology, Thomas Osang/Economics, and Thomas Ritz/Psychology for this discussion.
HELD: Engaging 21st Century Students: A Range of Interactive Options to
Enhance Your ClassroomLooking for new ways to spice up your classroom with today’s media savvy multitasking students who appear to have shorter attention spans? Panel members will discuss and actually demonstrate how they use a wide range of interactive classroom techniques to effectively reach these students and achieve a variety of both standard and domain specific learning objectives. Interactive options to be discussed range from simple role play ideas to educational gaming applications.
Participants of the event will walk away with fresh and interactive classroom techniques to enhance their lectures and a pool of options for better engaging today’s students. Resources for integrating interactive activities, applications and educational games will be provided. Specific links to articles on the topic and relevant websites as well as articles focused on the pedagogical issues related to these types of teaching methods will be distributed.
Our panelists include Carrie La Ferle/Temerlin Advertising Institute (moderator), Jose Bowen/Dean, Meadows School of the Arts, Elizabeth Stringer/The Guildhall, Dinesh Rajan/Electrical Engineering, and Maria Dixon/CCPA. Come and share in the discussions and demonstrations of new avenues for engaging students of the 21st Century in your classroom.
