Reading Circles are a way to gain deeper insight into a topic over time through reading, sharing, and discussing. Groups of faculty members meet once a week for two to four weeks to focus on a book or other resources that deal with teaching and learning issues. A knowledgeable and experienced faculty member facilitates each circle. These are more like interactive discussions than classes or workshops, and participants are invited to share their insights, experiences and resources.
The Spring 2006 Reading Circle will discuss the book, what
the best college teachers do, by Ken Bain.
"What makes a great teacher great? Who are the professors whom students remember long after graduation?" Ken Bain sought answers to these questions by contacting almost 100 successful college teachers across the disciplines. This remarkable book articulates the answers after 15 years of study.
This Reading Circle will be led by Professor
Jim Hopkins, chair of the Clements Department of History and one of
the inaugural (2001) recipients of The Altshuler Distinguished Teaching
Professor Award and member of the Academy of Distinguished Teachers at SMU.
There will be two sessions to this reading circle: Wednesdays, February 8 and 15th, from noon to 1:30 in the Hyer Room (121) of Dallas Hall.
