The Golden Mustangs, SMU alumni who graduated at least fifty years ago, have established an award for the advancement of teaching and learning.
This award of $1000 is given each year to a junior, tenure-track faculty member, whose teaching is consistently excellent; whose courses reflect thoughtful curricular development; and whose scholarship makes a meaningful contribution to the discipline and to student learning. This year's recipient is Maria Dixon (Assistant Professor, Corporate Communications and Public Affairs).

Since 2001, The Altshuler Distinguished Teaching Professor Award annually
recognizes four SMU faculty for their notable commitment to and achievements
in fostering student learning. These are faculty whose concerns for higher
education go beyond classroom boundaries and often the boundaries of their
own discipline. In student mentoring, in discussions about teaching and in
continuous reflection about their own successes and ways to improve, they
represent the highest achievement in reaching the goals of higher education. The 2009-11 Altshuler Award recipients are Christa De Luzio (Associate Professor, Dept. of History), Robert Howell (Assistant Professor, Dept. of Philosophy), Thomas Knock (Associate Professor, Dept. of History) and Thomas Osang (Associate Professor, Dept. of Economics).
Recipients receive a $10,000 award and membership in SMU's Academy of Distinguished Teachers. For two years following the award, they participate actively with other members of the Academy in faculty forums on pedagogical issues.
