Plaza Renovation
Meadows Museum
The Meadows Museum is completing the renovation of its entry plaza to create new green spaces, pathways, and display areas for its collection of modern sculpture, as well as a new terrace overlooking the Wave sculpture by Spanish artist/architect Santiago Calatrava.
Construction was completed on October 1, 2009.
This project has been funded by Ms. Nancy Hamon, the McDermott Foundation and the Meadows Foundation. Additional support for the Wave overlook has been provided by Dr. and Mrs. Richard Irwin. The design for the new entry was conceived by Thomas Krähenbühl from the Dallas firm TKTR architects, with input from Calatrava.
The new entrance will include the following:
- New access stairs from Bishop Boulevard, including a water feature at the base of the stairs and 14 planters leading up to the new Sculpture Garden.
- 9,000 square feet of lawn area, interspersed with crushed granite pathways, stone paving areas and benches for viewing the sculptures. It also will provide additional space for outdoor events.
- A large terrace overlooking the Calatrava Wave sculpture, with a glass railing for enhanced viewing.
- 4 strategically located overlooks, connecting the Sculpture Garden with the SMU campus at large.
- The plaza will be wi-fi accessible.
Please direct questions about construction at SMU to SMU Public Affairs. University Park construction projects sometimes affect traffic patterns near the campus and updates on those projects are available from the city's website.
