The Community Engagement Council (CEC) is a standing advisory Council with membership appointed jointly by the Provost and by the Vice-President of Student Affairs. The CEC reports directly to two Vice-Presidents of the University: Dr. Paul Ludden, Provost and Vice-President of Academic Affairs, and Dr. Lori S. White, Vice-President of Student Affairs. Its primary mission is to identify, recommend, and facilitate ways in which SMU can become an even more engaged partner with the Greater Dallas area in addressing the human and civic issues of the Greater Dallas area.

The membership includes a representative from each School of the SMU, representatives from various offices within Student Affairs (such as the Office of Leadership and Community Involvement), and representatives from other units of the University as appropriate.
