Research Interests:

Our interests reside at the interface of polymer, organic, and biochemistries with particular focus on fusing the fields to prepare novel materials with hybrid properties. We employ a variety of techniques to synthesize well-defined homopolymers, block copolymers, or polymer-protein conjugates with selected functionality, composition, and molecular architecture. These macromolecules demonstrate solution self-assembly tunable by changes in temperature, pH, or the concentration of a specific small molecule solute. Applying the appropriate stimulus can lead to assembly or disassembly of nanoscale aggregates (e.g., micelles, vesicles) or macroscopic materials (hydrogels). Many of our responsive polymeric materials are designed to be biocompatible or biodegradable and have potential applications in drug delivery, tissue engineering, and surface modification.
