The Reverend Dr. Stephen Rankin has been involved in higher education for nearly 20 years, as a professor, and a campus minister at Southwestern College in Winfield, Kansas, and now, as Chaplain to the SMU Community. Prior to this work, he served as pastor in three United Methodist congregations. He and his wife, Joni, provided leadership for an expatriate congregation in Rome, Italy.
A graduate of Kansas State University, Steve received his Master of Divinity from Saint Paul School of Theology, a Master of Theology from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School and a Ph.D. from the Joint Program in Religious Studies at Northwestern University and Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary. He is an Elder in the North Texas Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church.

He has recently published a book, titled, Aiming at Maturity: the Goal of the Christian Life (Wipf and Stock).
Steve and Joni have four grown children and one grandson.

Dr. Judy Henneberger
Associate Chaplain to the University

A native of south Louisiana, Judy received her bachelors in General Studies with an emphasis in women's studies and psychology from the University of Texas at Dallas. She holds a Masters of Theological Studies from the University of Dallas, as well as a Doctor of Minstry from Perkins School of Theology. All summed up, her work in pastoral ministry spans over thirty years, including eleven as Campus Minster of the Catholic Community at SMU. She oversees the Resident Chaplains Programs. She and her husband, John, have four children and eight grandchildren.

Betty McHone, MS
Assistant Chaplain and
Coordinator of Religious Life

Betty, a native Texas, makes her home in Kaufman, Texas with husband Will. They are parents to two grown daughters, both SMU grads and two baby grandsons. Betty holds a BS in Psychology along with her MS in Counseling, both from SMU. She oversees and convenes the Campus Ministry Council and coordinates SMU's Civil Rights Pilgrimage. Betty also offers counseling and collaborates in pastoral initiatives.

Katie Lewis, born and raised around Dallas, now lives in Combine, Texas with her husband, Ben and pocket beagle, Oizo. In their free time, they enjoy traveling, listening to live music and have a great time cooking together. Katie is working toward her Communication Studies degree and aspires to work in the field of fashion. As the administrative assistant in the Chaplain's office, she works to organize programs and enjoys meeting students.

Budi Taniwan
is a graduate from Perkins School with a Sacred Music degree.
Budi is a gifted musician and leads music and liturgy at University Worship.
A native of Jakarta, Indonesia, Budi came to the US to study at Southwestern
College and graduated in 2010. Budi looks forward to working with students
in different settings in music and liturgy and leadership at University Worship.
Budi loves to cook Asian Food but finds himself enjoying Tex-Mex since his
arrival in Dallas.

Rev. Todd von Helms
University Chaplain Fellow

As the University Chaplain Fellow, Todd von Helms is involved in various aspects of the Office of the Chaplain, including the weekly University Worship service, the Campus Ministry Council, and the Resident Chaplains Program. Todd is the Resident Community Chaplain for the Boaz dormitory, and also helps lead the Graduate Christian Fellowship at SMU. Todd received his undergraduate degree from the University of Texas at Austin. He was an assistant professor at Dallas Baptist University, teaching courses in history and religion, before heading to Duke University, where he earned his fourth graduate degree. Following graduation, Todd worked on the Lilly funded Clergy Compensation Study, interviewing dozens of clergy from fourteen denominations, as well as Duke Divinity School's Clergy Health Initiative. Before arriving at SMU, he was a Director of the Undergraduate Internship Program in the Sanford School of Public Policy at Duke University. Todd and his wife, Caroline have two boys and live in Richardson.

Mary Katherine Shoemaker
University Worship Student Volunteer Coordinator

Mary Katherine Shoemaker is a sophomore President's Scholar from Point Clear,
Alabama. She is a premedical student with a major in Biology and a major in
Independent Studies in the Liberal Arts. She is a member of Delta Delta Delta,
Mustang Heroes, Honor Council, University Honors Program Advisory Council and is
the Event Coordinator for Alpha Lambda Delta honors fraternity. Mary Katherine
has attended and volunteered at University Worship since Fall 2011
