An internship is any
career related work experience which provides exposure to an
occupation, industry or career in which you have an interest.
Internships can be paid, "for credit", and/or on a
volunteer basis. The majority of internships received by the Career
Center are paid with an average salary between $7-$12 per
hour. At SMU, each department determines if they offer courses
for students to receive academic credit. You are responsible
for checking with your advisor
or department to determine if credit can be granted.
Internships may occur
in the summer, fall, spring semesters and can be continuous from one
semester to the next. Typically, summer internships are
full-time positions. However, fall and spring semester
internships are offered on a part-time basis (15-25 hours per week)
so students may continue taking a full course load while working.

Preparation-
What do I need before beginning my job search?
1) Gather Your Marketing Tools - in
order to "market" yourself in pursuit of an internship,
you will first need to prepare before jumping out there to pursue a
position. Fortunately, you have lots of resources available to
you on campus! You will need to get working on the following:
*
Resume
* Cover Letter
*
Interviewing
2) Develop a Plan of Action
-
In
addition to jobs that come to the SMU Hegi Family Career Development
Center, it is in your
best interest to pursue multiple avenues when job searching.
We recommend you do the following to determine a strategy and
resources that would be most helpful to you:
*
Make a list of the types of
companies you are interested in (i.e. what industries
interest you, what size company is most appealing, what type of
work/experience
would
you like to gain) AND target these types of companies in the city
where you
would
like to work.
* Pick up handouts in the Career
Center related to these topics and/or review
the Job
Search & Networking books in the Career Center Resource Library.
* Schedule an appointment with your
career counselor to determine/ discuss
your interests and to develop a strategy for your job search.
3) Be Organized - Keeping track of information you
obtain will make your job search less stressful and
manageable! You will need to develop a system that makes
retrieving information easy (i.e. website addresses, business cards,
company literature, applications, copies of resumes you sent,
contact information, responses to calls/ meetings, etc.).
