Have you thought about what you’re going to do when you graduate? Maybe you’ve put together a great resume, had some awesome internships and feel prepared. But, I’m sure the thought of trying to find a job in this economy makes you a bit nervous.

Don’t be. Did you know that today’s top employers are just as worried about finding the right people as you are about finding the right job? Believe me, that’s why Universum is in business.

We want to connect you with today’s top employers who are interested in hiring you directly out of school. We would really appreciate it if you could take a 10 minute survey to instruct them on how to hire you.

Every student who participates will receive a free WetFeet Insider Guide that they can use to brand themselves through social media. Participants will also receive a special offer from Businessweek (our media partner for publishing these results) and will have the opportunity to win scholarships, internships and donate to some worthwhile charities.

:: Job Tip of the Week

Succeeding at the Career & Internship Fair

With the Career & Internship Fair coming up on Wednesday, February 15, we are re-posting our tips to prepare for and make the most out of the fair!

By Janet Lewis
Assistant Director, Hegi Career Center

With upcoming tests, papers and assignments, it is hard to think about making time think about your career, but consider that papers lead to a grade to a degree and to a career. The Career & Internship Fair leads to connections with job opportunities. Job possibilities can turn into job actualities.

Here are a few tips on how to make the most of the time you do have at the Career & Internship Fair on Wednesday, February 15:

First: You need to have a plan.
Learn about the companies that will be attending the Fair. These are listed on the Career Center website: www.smu.edu/career. Make a list of the companies that you would like to contact. Go to the company websites to learn more. Write down two or three things you like about the company. You can use this information when you talk with the employers.

Second: Take time to prepare.
A nice inexpensive portfolio will hold several copies of your resume, paper and a pen, well as the business cards you collect from the company representatives. Include any research you have done on a company that you want to remember.

Decide what you will wear. A suit is recommended.

Take some time to practice your approach. Introduce yourself, talk about your major, your accomplishments, and career interests. Practicing this ahead of time will help you present a confident image to the employer. Prepare some questions to ask the employers based on your company research. Briefly state your interest in the company.

Third: Your strategy for the Career & Internship Fair visit.
Arrive early and take some time to locate the companies that you want to visit. Approach the representative with a confident smile and a handshake. Introduce yourself and briefly describe your interest and accomplishments. Ask the employer any questions that you have about their programs and positions. Plan to spend no more than 5-8 minutes with each employer. Be sensitive to others waiting. You may offer your resume, however, some companies have rules about taking resumes. They may ask you to apply for the position on line.

Thank the representative and ask for a business card. If the representative does not have a card, note his or her name and take one of the pamphlets on the table that has the company address on it. That way you can write a note to follow-up with companies in which you are interested. Make any notes on your conversation on the back of the business card. Follow up with a thank you note within 24 hours.

Career Fairs are a great way to develop contacts with companies, and contacts are key in building your network of professionals in your field. The job search is hard work but the pay-off continues for a very long time.
