Recycling at SMU
Americans throw away enough writing and office paper annually to build a wall 12 feet high from Los Angeles to New York City. US businesses consume an estimated 21 million tons of paper every year; the equivalent of approximately 350 million trees!
See the problem? Here is how you can help! 3 R - Reduce, Reuse and Recycle
Every ton of recycled paper saves 4,100 kWh of energy, 7,000 gallons of water, and 3 cubic yards of landfill and 17 trees. Each of those trees can filter up to 60 pounds of pollutants for the air each year!
How is SMU contributing to recycling? Single Stream Recycle
From 2003 to 2009, the Single Stream Recycle Program at SMU has collected over 1,832 tons of materials. During this time period, SMU has saved the environment:
*Trees - 31,144
*Energy - 7,511,200 kWh
*Water - 12,824,000 gallons
*Landfill Space - 5,496 cubic yard
*Reduced air pollution - 109,920 pounds.
SMU was awarded the 2005 North Texas Corporate Recycle Association Environmental Vision Award!
