The Mission of the Building Access Office is to provide a secure environment on the SMU campus through the installation and service of all door hardware, the issuance of keys and the granting of access via the SMU ID card.
Our Responsibilities:
Access to campus buildings and facilities, other than residence halls, is coordinated through the Building Access Office in the Dawson Service Center, Room 153.
To get your key, you must submit a Key Request Form. The Key Request Form must have the authorization of the department director or designated building manager. The Building Access Office will contact you once your key has been made and is ready for pick up. You must pick up your key in person and sign for it. You will need your SMU ID or a valid photo form of identification..
*All key requests or lock replacements must come in on the proper request form. Please use the link provided in the chart for your convenience. To keep the system streamlined requests via other avenues will be returned to the originator unfulfilled.
*Only one key will be cut with any lock change request. If you need more than one key you will need to use the link for Additional Keys to submit your request.
*A Building Manager or Department Director’s approval is required to process a key request. If the request is for either a sub-master or master key a Dean or Associate Vice President’s approval will be required.
*When the requested key(s) are available, the person being issued the key(s) will be contacted. Only that person may pick up the key(s) and will be required to sign a release for the keys.
*Only one (1) key will be issued for any area to a person. There will not be multiple keys issued. The key must be checked out to the person that will be holding the key.
The last
two items in the chart could be considered fines rather than fees but are
necessary requirements falling under the “deterrent to waste” category of our
goals. As long as keys are returned or picked up as they should be, these fines
remain simply a deterrent and become a non-factor.
Access to campus buildings and
facilities, other than residence halls, is coordinated through the Building
Access Office in the Dawson Service Center, Room 153. To get access into any
academic building on the SMU ID card, the request must be made through the
Building Manager or Department director. They must submit the Card Access
Request Form. The person that has made the request will be contacted as soon
as access is allowed. It is the Building Manager or the Department Director's
responsibility to inform the Building Access Office when access is no longer
needed, so that it can be removed from the SMU ID card.
The Lock Shop is responsible for all locks and hardware . Keys are supplied by the Lock Shop to the Building access Office located in the Dawson Service Center. Keys are issued by Building Access who then assigns the key(s) to the user who is responsible for the return of keys once they are no longer required. Each department is responsible for the inventory of keys issued to its employees. At employment, new personnel will be provided the necessary key(s) for access of work areas at no charge to the department. Keys can be replaced or added by the user and/or the department as requested at the expense of the department. The locks for the University buildings are keyed to a master keying system. The Lock Shop is responsible for seeing that each lock is keyed differently, and is responsible for keeping a record of the keys which will operate each lock.
