Family Assistance Loan | Federal Perkins Loan | Summer Studies Loan | Emergency Loans

From time to time, students find themselves in unforeseeable circumstances and are unable to meet their short-term financial obligations. SMU provides students with several emergency short-term no-interest or low-interest loan options to cover the costs of books, food, medication, rent or other expenses as a result of an unexpected situation.  The chart below lists the emergency loans that are offered through various offices on campus.

Student Life Emergency Loan

Dean of Student Life (DoSL)

Only awarded in Fall/Spring (available from first day of class through 30 days prior to last day of class)—can grant exceptions for summer school students

Recipient must be currently enrolled

Limit: twice per year (once per semester)

Due within 30 days

MAY BE USED FOR: books, transportation, off-campus housing, personal financial emergencies

MAY NOT BE USED FOR: any university expenses EXCEPT books (such as - fines, late fees, debts, tuition/fees, insurance, etc.).

Multicultural Emergency Loan

$100.00-$200.00

Student Activities & Multicultural Student Affairs (SAMSA)

Student must complete application provided by the SAMSA Office; director reviews application to determine award

Only issued in Fall/Spring (given first day of class through 30 days prior to last day of class)

Due within 30 days

Hiram Emergency Loan

$200.00

Student Accounts

Due within 30 days

Recipient must not have a balance on his/her account (exceptions may be granted at discretion of Student Account Specialist and supervisor)

Only issued in Fall/Spring (given first day of class through 30 days prior to last day of class)

Emmet P & Tess White Emergency Loan

Up to a max of $1,000.00

 

Dean of Student Life (DoSL)

Due in 12 months with 60 day grace period; repaid with 1-10 payments (arranged with DoSL office when applying for loan)

Recipient must be currently enrolled.

MAY BE USED FOR: books, transportation, off-campus housing, personal financial emergencies

MAY NOT BE USED FOR: any university expenses EXCEPT books (such as - fines, late fees, debts, tuition/fees, insurance, etc.).

Limit: twice during college career

(determined individually)

Financial Aid

Repayment arrangements made with Financial Aid Counselor—usually repaid with Financial Aid (sometimes other repayment arrangements are made)
