The New Testament Translated by William Tyndale

The release of Luther’s translation in 1522 inspired William Tyndale to begin translation of an English version. Unable to acquire permission to begin from the Bishop of London as required by law, when the Bishop refused, Tyndale fled to Germany, and began work there. His translation of the New Testament was under press in Cologne by 1525. In 1530, Tyndale published his translation of the Pentateuch, soon followed by the rest of the Old Testament. He had prepared a complete Bible in English by 1534, but made the mistake of permitting the inclusion of a colophon identifying him as the translator, and he was promptly imprisoned. In 1536 Tyndale was convicted of heresy and executed. This is the “Blank Stone” edition and is one of three quarto editions of 1536 illustrated with woodcuts. The text is open to John 1:1.
