NINETEENTH-CENTURY MISSIONARY BIBLES A significant portion of the Prothro Collection consists of vernacular translations of the Bible into non-European languages. During the nineteenth century the missionary zeal of European Christians led to the publication of Bible translations into numerous new languages as a means of evangelization. The rare Turkish, Uyghur, Naipali, and Eskimo Bibles exhibited in this section reflect these efforts. |
