THE ELIZABETH PERKINS PROTHRO BIBLE COLLECTION was donated by Mr. and Mrs. Charles N. Prothro in 1996. Totaling more than 300 volumes, the Prothro Collection contains some of Bridwell's greatest treasures, such as an early fifteenth-century Wycliffite English New Testament manuscript, a Coverdale Bible (1535), a vellum leaf from the Gutenberg Bible (c. 1455), and a thirteenth-century Parisian Latin Bible written on vellum. Items from the Prothro Collection formed the basis for Bridwell Library's first exhibition, “Landmarks in Printing of the Bible,” following the building's renovation in 1989.
