WORSHIP AND DEVOTION

29. [Psalm paraphrases, in Latin]. Psalterium Regii Prophetae Davidis. Translated by Augustus I, Elector of Saxony. [Dresden(?): Printed for Augustus I, Elector of Saxony], 1568.

Bridwell Library holds the only recorded copy of this Latin verse paraphrase of the Psalms by Augustus I, Elector of Saxony (1532–1586), presumably based on Martin Luther’s German version. Privately printed for the Elector, it was bound in gilt vellum by the Saxon court bookbinder, Caspar Meuser (c. 1550–1612). Ink inscriptions establish that Augustus I presented this copy to the twelve-year-old Moritz I, Landgrave of Hesse-Kassel in 1584.
