THEOLOGY AND CHURCH HISTORY

21. [Catholic Church]. Catechismus, ex decreto Concilii Tridentini, ad parochos, Pii Quinti Pont. Max. iussu editus. Rome: Paulus Manutius, 1566.

The first edition of the Roman Catechism remains an essential work in the history of the Catholic Church. Containing all of the doctrinal revisions called for by the Council of Trent (1545–1563), it was designed to enable priests to instruct their parishioners more effectively in the basic tenets of their faith. It consists of four main sections concerning the Apostles’ Creed, the Sacraments, the Ten Commandments, and daily prayer modeled on the Lord’s Prayer. To assist in the dissemination of this catechism, the Council also ordered translations into the vernacular languages of every Christian nation.
