BIBLES

9. [Slavonic Bible]. [Biblīa sirēc knigy vetkhago i novago zavĕta po jazykū slovenskū]. Moscow: Pecatnyj Dvor, 1663.

This Slavonic Bible, the earliest Russian book at Bridwell Library, is the 1663 reprint of the Ostrog Bible of 1581, the first complete edition of the Bible in Old Church Slavonic and the first printed in Cyrillic type. Intended for the Orthodox inhabitants of the region, the Bible relied heavily on the Greek recension attributed to Lucian of Antioch, the Slavonic Bible of Archbishop Gennadius (d. 1505), manuscript and printed versions of the Greek Bible, and other manuscript sources.
