THE SPANISH INDEX

30
. Antonio Zapata, General Inquisitor of Spain (1550–1635). Novus index librorum prohibitorum et expurgatorum. Seville: Francisco de Lyra, 1632.

In the exhibited Spanish Index, the elaborate title-page engraving designed by Juan de Herrera shows St. Peter (left) and St. Paul (right) within an architectural framework with personifications of Christian learning and faith. Compiled for Cardinal Antonio Zapata, this Spanish Index was the most expansive to date, listing more than 2,500 forbidden titles.
