The DeGolyer family has long been associated with book
collecting and Helen Warren
DeGolyer with bookbinding, an art
she both loved and mastered. It is not surprising;
therefore,
that soon after she died in 1995 Mrs. DeGolyer’s family honored
her wishes
by creating an endowment to support American
bookbinding at Bridwell Library.
Working closely with Bridwell
director Dr. Valerie Hotchkiss, Mrs. DeGolyer’s
children, Edith
Warren DeGolyer and Everett Lee DeGolyer, and her brother, Joe
Warren, established the Helen Warren DeGolyer Exhibition and
Award for
American Bookbinding and the DeGolyer Conference. In
addition, her children gifted
Mrs. DeGolyer’s collection of fine
bindings to the library. For more than a decade
these events and
the generosity, enthusiasm, and vision of the DeGolyer family
have
greatly benefited bookbinding and Bridwell Library.
