Special Collections

Bridwell Library's Special Collections contain over 50,000 printed books dating from the fifteenth to the twenty-first century. The strengths of the collection  are in the fields of theology, church history, scripture, liturgy, and philosophy. Many of these editions are early, distinguished by fine illustration and typography, interesting provenances, or historically significant bindings.  The growing collection of fifteenth century and early printing attempts to represent typographical and geographical trends broadly. The current collection of  Western manuscripts spans from the first century through the early modern period. The library holds a number of manuscripts from Asia and the Middle East as well. Holdings specific to the study of Methodism include autograph letters of John Wesley, early Methodist imprints and archives.

Special Collections materials must be used in the Decherd Turner Reading Room.

Special Collections also includes a Special Reference section comprised of catalogs, Initial, [Biblia Irregularis]bibliographies, monographs, facsimiles, and journals that support research in the subjects and genres described above, and in the history of the book. These books may be checked out for in-library use.

Rare book librarians, in general, do not provide financial appraisals of books. Appraisals are considered a function of antiquarian booksellers. The curators, however, are happy to assist in identification.
