Safety Checklist

Urge your students to follow these basic safety steps, recommended by the SMU Police Department and the Office of Student Life:

Become familiar with safety procedures and notifications on campus – including what to do in the event of evacuations, lockdowns and severe weather – at smu.edu/emergency.

Know your SMU Police Department numbers. In case of emergency, call 911 from a campus phone, pick up a “blue-light” phone or call 214-768-3333 from a cell phone. For non-emergency questions or concerns, call 214-768-3388.

Report suspicious activities to SMU Police. Call 911 in case of emergencies. In non-emergencies, SMU’s Silent Witness program allows anonymous tips on activities including suspected drug use, underage drinking, theft and assault. Call 214-SMU-2TIP or submit anonymous tips online at smu.edu/2tip; both are checked daily.

Become familiar with the “blue light” phones located around campus, which are directly linked to the SMU Police.

Use SMU’s safety escort service. “Giddy-Up” golf-cart drivers provide free rides on campus from 10 p.m. to 3 a.m. Thursdays through Sundays. Call 214-768-3388 or flag down a Giddy-Up driver. SMU Police also provide security escorts to all locations on campus 24 hours a day. Call 214-768-3388 or use a “blue-light” emergency phone.

Take a self-defense class through the Wellness Program. Visit smu.edu/wellness for class schedules.

Lock it up or risk losing it. Residence hall rooms, cars and bicycles should be secured. Most thefts on campus occur because students forget or neglect to lock room doors or safeguard property.

Engrave identification numbers on your valuables. Etch your SMU ID number on computers, electronic equipment and other items of value. Engraved items are easier for police to identify and return to owners, if stolen. Engravers are available at the SMU Police Department.

Regularly check the SMU Police Department Web site at smu.edu/pd to view crime alerts, safety information and the crime activity log.
