Joining the Mothers’ and Dads’ Clubs at SMU is an important way for parents to give and receive support, say new Mothers’ Club President Betty Wright and Dads’ Club President David Lott (’70), who previously served as president in 2001-02.
“Parents stay connected throughout the college experience, and their students achieve more,” says Wright.
The clubs’ projects for the school year include:
Endowed Scholarship Funds, supported by membership dues. Last year’s funds provided need- and merit-based scholarships for 16 undergraduates.
The Spring Gifts Campaign, benefiting student experience. Past gifts have gone to the Jim Caswell Endowment for Leadership Development and Training, Mustang Corral, SMU LeaderShape and scoreboards for the intramural fields.
Regional Representatives, who serve as links to other parents in their areas. The volunteers host send-off parties, place “Welcome” calls and help distribute information in the event of a campus emergency.
Wright also urges parents to attend Family Weekend September 28-30, when the Mothers’ Club co-sponsors a kickoff luncheon, and the Dads’ Club puts on a game-day barbecue.
“The Mothers’ Club turned 81 this year,” Wright says. “Like the first clubs, we’re still promoting ‘good cheer’ and anything that’s positive for students and parents. We’ve come a long way, but our goals haven’t changed.”
