Giving Back to the Future
As an SMU student, Jim Caswell learned the importance of leadership. As the University's vice president for student affairs, he has shared that knowledge with the undergraduates who followed him. Now, as Caswell prepares to retire, the Hilltop will honor his years of service with a gift to the campus leaders of the future.
"In 48 years as an SMU student and administrator, Jim Caswell has touched countless lives," says Bonner Allen, the University's director of development for campus development. "Since he announced his retirement, we've been flooded with inquiries from alumni and students who want to do something to express their admiration for Dr. Caswell as well as their gratitude for the impact he made on their lives. As Dr. Caswell's passion is leadership and leadership development, ensuring that students will have permanent resources for those needs is the perfect way to honor him."
The Jim Caswell Endowment for Leadership Development and Training will support special initiatives for SMU students. The endowment will help develop innovative leadership training workshops and retreats such as LeaderShape, as well as provide internship and mentoring experiences. The fund also will incorporate leadership and career development courses within the academic curriculum.
Funds from the endowment will be available to support cutting-edge leadership programs throughout the Student Affairs division, Allen says.
