Title: Mitigating Risk through Better Decision Making: Contractor Management Best Practices and Statistical Method Applications
Global industry trends indicate increased outsourcing of non-core business activities (i.e. construction, maintenance, design/engineering, etc.) to third party contracting companies. One recent study completed with 41 oil and gas companies operating across 84 countries indicates that contractor man hours are four times higher than employee man hours.
Increased use of third party workforce exacerbates inherent risk associated with diminished control and oversight, and ultimately results in higher risk exposure to the outsourcing party - risk of humans being injured, facilities being damaged, and the environment being contaminated, just to name a few costly examples. Data from several industries show that contractors face 1.5 to 3 times higher incident rates than employees of the outsourcing company.
Utilizing a database of over 19,000 contracting companies and 135 operating companies, ISN has accumulated a database of health and safety statistics that is not otherwise available. This presents the opportunity for applied statistical analyses including tracking and trending of incident rates, and developing correlations between data input by contracting companies and their outcomes with respect to health and safety management and performance improvement initiatives. ISNetworld employs various statistical analysis methods to develop leading and lagging performance indicator metrics.
The following are core topics to be presented and discussed:
1. Brief Overview of ISN
2. Case Studies: Using data collected by the ISN database of 20,000 contractors to create industry trend analysis and case studies for owner client companies.
3. Leading/Lagging Performance Indicators: Key performance indicators being utilized for informed decision making (Total Recordable Incident Rate, Fatality Statistics, Workers’ Compensation Modification Rates, etc). Application of descriptive statistics, correlation and regression analysis models.
4. ISN Opportunities: Information on opportunities at ISNetworld for graduate students, others.
**ISNetworld provides an online contractor/supplier management database designed to meet internal and governmental health, safety, and environmental requirements. ISNetworld Review and Verification Services (RAVS) validate contractor/supplier information. ISNetworld standardizes health and safety communication and provides a method for subscribers to house documents, measure, compare and benchmark health and safety statistics, and provides a method of evaluation and communication between companies and their contractors. Contractor/suppliers also use the system to manage training and record keeping requirements. For more information, visit www.isnetworld.com.
